Leeds artists Mark Sofilas first UK solo exhibition

An exhibition of original oil paintings

First Impressions

June 3rd to July 15th 2011

Venue Art in the Mill,

Knaresborough 01423 862963Serenity Mark Sofilas

Art in the Mill, the Knaresborough contemporary art gallery has been chosen by Mark Sofilas the Leeds based fine artist as the venue to host his first one man show in the UK.

Mark, an Australian by birth says “shortly after I moved to Leeds three years ago, I came across the gallery in the Old Flax Mill in Knaresborough and Elaine gave me a very warm welcome”. ’’As it happens’’ he goes on to say,

“I had already fallen for the town’s charm and sense of place, so to have my pictures in the gallery there gave me a real boost”

Mark began his professional career in 1981 working in publishing as an illustrator by day and as a freelance artist by night.

He now paints at his studio in Leeds when he is not journeying through the region. He takes inspiration and ideas from his travels across the region and in his own words ‘’the idiosyncrasies of the Yorkshire landscape’’. He says he enjoys the freedom that relocation and the change in everyday life has given him. He loves exploring the fresh perspective that accompanies him as an artist who is experiencing a completely different environment.

His paintings are primarily in oil, a medium he finds rewarding when developing textures, colour and the intrinsic geometry of the natural world. His use of colour is bold and direct often encouraging the viewer to consider familiar landscapes in a new guise.

Elaine at Art in the Mill, recalls meeting Mark for the first time in 2008 and remembers her spontaneous delight with his paintings. The first impression he made lasted a long time and she is delighted that he has called his show ‘First Impressions’.

Mark’s first solo show follows on from his recent successes at London’s Affordable Art Fair and will feature many new and previously unseen paintings.
